The first year as a truck driver is the start of a new chapter for many and comes with challenges and rewards. You’ll be spending your time training, taking on new driving routes and getting acclimated to the lifestyle of a truck driver. Although you’ve passed your CDL training with flying colors, there are still several things you’ll need to learn about the life of a truck driver. Here are a few things to note:
1. Prepare for seat time
During the first year, you’ll most likely be driving with a seat trainer. You’ll be sitting in the passenger seat at some points but also taking turns driving under the seat driver. This is the best chance to learn from an experienced truck driver and discover what it’s like to be faced with tough decisions on the road.
It can be tough to be in such close quarters with another truck driver, so be sure to be respectful of each other’s space. Come prepared with questions for your seat trainer, but also be prepared to listen.
2. Adjust to being away from home
If you get homesick easily, then being on the road for long periods may not be an easy adjustment right away. Getting used to being gone for multiple weeks for cross-country routes is no easy feat, so remember to be patient with yourself.
Keep yourself company for those long stretches of driving time by listening to your favorite audiobook or podcast. Be sure to always check in at home and with your spouse or significant other. Remember that you are not alone and always have support!
3. Understand time management and safety
When you’re on the job, you’re expected to deliver materials on deadline without compromising your safety. You’ll want to build trust with your employer and dispatcher the first year of driving by showing you’re able to fulfill the job on time and within contract expectations. To do this, you’ll need to plan for unforeseen accidents and barriers. Before leaving on a trip, be sure to follow truck driving regulations to avoid accidents and delays. The better record you have, the more likely you’ll get hired for future jobs.
